The Arabization of Humanity: The First Grammar of the Arabic Language to be Issued in Western Europe
Abstract
The first Arabic printed grammar in Western Europe was that of the French humanist Guillaume Postel (1510-1581). Published in Latin, probably in 1540, it offers a complete learning of the Arabic to all curious and learned people. It features Arabic printing, specially created by the author. This is not the first experiment in this field: Postel's work is part of a vast current of linguistic reflection and major technical inventions. Difficult to read, faulty and incomplete, it is in fact very little circulated but bears witness to an early and scientific interest in the Arabic language in early-modern Europe.
