Marriage Presents for Mesopotamia people
Abstract
The ancient Iraqi community was an organized and highly civitized to control individuals behavior, their commitment and respectfulness to canonical rules. Marriage presents are one of the aspects that reflects the ancient Iraqi habits and traditions through marriage ceremonies which its impressions are lasting till now as a part of our new community for both past and present periods. this sort of custom transfered to other ancient oriental communities especially the neighbouring countries to Mesopotamia. In this research, we deal with engagement and marriage presents, we also point to the matter of to whom these presents should be given?, the person who is in charge of giving the present?, the time of presenting the present. In addition, we discussed the value of the presents to show the rate of difference among community individuals and finally to whom should these presents be given as hereditary? this item is subjected to canonical rules which is emphasized by ancient Iraqi codes in order to save and protect the rights of the beneficiary. These presents were inscripted on a sealed tablets with witnesses for legality in the first place and to guarantee the beneficiary rights. this type of presents passed from generation to another and still carry the scent of the past especially among popular levels.
