Abstract

The difficulties experienced by new language learners other than their mother tongue depend on the vocal and verbal determinants in the nature of the language. Some important determining points in the nature of a language are: grammar, difficulties in reading, writing, listening, and speaking. It should be known that each of them has a different difficulty for students learning Turkish. This research aims at is identifying the problems faced by fourth- grade students learning Turkish in the Department of Turkish Language and Literature, College of Arts, University of Mosul during the academic year 2021-2022, and to offer solutions for them. Within the scope of the research, data are collected from the students learning Turkish in the above-mentioned department by using a semi-structured interview form. Qualitative data analysis techniques are used on the collected data. Questions about language skills are presented to students based on the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. The topics presented to the students in the research are grouped under four main headings: language skills, grammar, language education, and materials that are taught in the department. There are a total of 25 questions under these headings. Throughout this research, the problems arising from the language characteristics of Turkish, basic language skills, grammar and the method of teaching the lessons are determined in line with the opinions of the students. At the end of the research, suggestions are presented to solve the identified problems.
