Abstract

Through their characters, some novelists seek to identify a specific reality within the narrative text by describing the novel as an art that cant be far from reality with its social, psychological and intellectual dimensions. The reader notices that they deliberately paint their characters with a social figure, using characters name as a way to represent this reality. The names are described as the identity of the character that performs in the contextual reality the same function that the characters perform in real or social reality. It is a linguistic sign that has two sides: signified and signifier; signified is present as its name, and its meaning is absent considering its status within the narrative fabric. The study attempts by applying the data of the semiotic method to research the semiotics of the personal name and its role in depicting the social dimension of the novel's character. It takes Ibrahims Al-Sayed Taha Riah Alkhalij as a model. The study is divided into two aspects, the first talks about semiotics, and then about the character and its importance within the fictional work. The second deals with the characters of the novel and the significance of their names. It has three sections: the significance of conformity, the significance of paradox, and the significance of transformation.
