The Trade of Wheat in Ottoman Iraq1700 - 1914
Abstract
The trading of wheat was part of a large trading business which was carried out with the neighboring lands of Iraq during the Ottoman period. This research deals with the economic history of Iraq especially The Trade of Wheat in Ottoman Iraq1700 - 1914. The research attempts to explain the crops and products of Iraq which were among the exported goods of the country at that time. A researcher in the economic history will naturally face difficulties while researching in such a topic because of the scattered information. The research addresses the geographical locations of the wheat cultivated areas as well as the trading of wheat inside Iraq and outside it. Further, the research deals with the gradual outside expansion of the wheat trading in the second half of the nineteenth century and discusses the markets of this crop and the difficulties entailed in the trading. The research has shown the role of each willaya, region, in the cultivation and trading of this crop as well the significant impact of the wheat in the economy of the Ottoman Iraq.
