A Revaluation of our Knowledge on the History of Ancient Iraq
Abstract
Our knowledge on the history of ancient Iraq was based, untill the beginning of the 19th centurey A.D., mainly on the old Testament and Greek historians. The excavations carried out by various expeditions during the 19th and the 20th centuries in Iraq, have unearthed huge number of ancient sites and revealed thousands of buildings and archaeological finds, most important of which was cuneiform writings written on clay tablets and stones. These discoveries provided us with a detailed information on varios aspects of the ancient history of Iraq. yet, they represent mainly the official points of view and neglect the ordinarymans, that is the common, point of view. Moreover, all cuneiform texts were translated by western scholares, most of whom carried a prejudiced attitude towards the Assyrians and Babylonians. The writer points out these facts and warns students and young researchers of being mislead by such prejudiced attitudes and gives a number of suggestions to be in mind when writing the history of ancient Iraq.
