Policy on the Use of Generative AI and AI-Assisted Technologies
Writing Process
This policy applies only to the writing process, not to the use of AI tools for analyzing or interpreting research data.
Generative AI and AI-assisted technologies may be used solely to enhance the readability and language of manuscripts. Their use must always involve human oversight and critical review, as such tools can produce inaccurate, incomplete, or biased content. Authors remain fully responsible and accountable for the accuracy, originality, and integrity of their work.
Authors must disclose any use of AI technologies in their manuscripts. A transparency statement will be included in the published version to maintain trust among readers, reviewers, editors, and contributors, and to ensure compliance with the terms of use of the tools applied.
AI tools must not be listed as authors or co-authors, nor cited as such. Authorship carries responsibilities—including approving the final version, addressing questions of accuracy or integrity, and ensuring originality—that only humans can fulfill.
Figures, Images, and Artwork
Generative AI or AI-assisted tools may not be used to create or alter images, figures, or artwork in manuscripts. Prohibited actions include enhancing, obscuring, moving, removing, or introducing elements into images. Acceptable adjustments are limited to brightness, contrast, or color balance, provided they do not obscure or alter original information. Submitted images may be subject to forensic checks for irregularities.
The only exception is when AI-assisted imaging is part of the research design or methods (e.g., biomedical imaging). In such cases, authors must describe the process in detail within the Methods section, including the name, version, and manufacturer of the tool, as well as how it was applied. Authors may also be asked to provide original, pre-AI-adjusted images for editorial assessment.
Generative AI may not be used for graphical abstracts or artwork in manuscripts. For cover art, its use may be permitted only with prior approval from the editor and publisher, provided that rights clearance and correct attribution are ensured.
