Abstract

The Arabic language is known for its richness and complexity, making it one of the significant challenges in the field of natural language processing using artificial intelligence (AI). Despite the considerable advancements in this field, Arabic continues to face difficulties in being recognized and understood by AI systems due to its unique linguistic features. These include its morphological and syntactical complexity, the absence of diacritics in written texts, the variation between Modern Standard Arabic and regional dialects, as well as the lack of annotated linguistic resources. This article discusses the challenges AI faces in understanding Arabic and explores opportunities to improve its processing through the development of deep learning models tailored for Arabic, enhancing open linguistic data, and expanding collaboration between academia and industry. It highlights the importance of finding solutions to these challenges, such as improving dialectal understanding and developing techniques for processing both standard and colloquial Arabic texts. The central question that remains is: How can AI overcome these challenges and achieve tangible progress in processing Arabic effectively, especially given the vast differences between Modern Standard Arabic and the various dialects?
