Abu Bakr’s Inauguration Speech: Critical Discourse Analysis
Abstract
This study embarks on a critical discourse analysis (CDA) of Abu Bakrs inauguration speech. It aims to uncover the underlying ideologies and textual as well as discursive strategies employed by the first Caliph of Islam. Employing an eclectic model predominantly based on Faircloughs three-dimensional framework, the analysis delves into the textual strategies, including the use of ideologically contested words, meaning relations, and transitivity, while also exploring discursive strategies such as presupposition and intertextuality. The study reveals that Abu Bakrs speech is intertextual with other religious texts and characterized by positively oriented ideologies that emphasize social justice, equality, leadership humility, accountability, and obedience to Allah.
