Hammam Al-Aleel Nahehia A Study in Regional Geography
Abstract
The district of Hammam Al-Aleel lies in the heart of Mosul governorate, with a total area of 757 km2 (2% of total directorate area). It lies within the (Region) climate and it is characterized by its semi-mountain like surface, natural plants and hot climate.The population in Hammam Al-Aleel reached 67332 in 2010, with population density of 89% per km2, 19894 of which are urban residents (within the city of Hamam Al-Aleel) and 47548 countryside dwellers for the same year, and were randomly distributed along 45 district with an annual growth rate of 2.92% for the period (1997-2010). Land uses are and populated areas amounting to 117.89 km2 of total district area varied in the district according to Andersons Classification, with infrastructure, while open lands (grazing land) amounted to 101 km2 and barren land to 13.11 km2.Human and natural assets were fundamental in diversifying fields of economy in the district of Hammam Al-Aleel, as the most agricultural density was recorded in the riverbanks of the Tigris with a total area of 18 km2 which is generally planted with winter and summer crops, while other areas fit for planting were planted with grain crops (wheat and barley) with a total area of 473 km2, i.e. 90% of total fertile. There is also a good numbers of animal such as cows, buffaloes, sheep and goats in the district, with sheep having the largest number with 57251. Hammam Al-Aleel is well-known for its cement industry which rivals the foreign counterparts, and is supported by the abundance of raw materials, workforce, marketing outlets, etc., with an annual actual capacity of 302000 tons per year 2010 (7.65% of actual production power in Iraq). Transport network is limited within the district, and includes the Baghdad-Mosul highway with a length of 22,300 km, its main branch the Mosul-Beiji highway with a length of 4.49 km, and secondary roads within the district which provide access to services within the district. In addition to the Mosul-Baghdad railway which passes through Hammam Al-Aleel along the riverbanks of the Tigris, with a length of 30 km.As for individuals working in the economic sectors, their numbers amounted to 1.91% of total workforce in the district, who mostly are concentrated in the city of Hammam Al-Aleel. Hamma Al-Aleel is also known for being an active touristic spot, especially in Summer in the Spring mainly due to its healing properties lying in its mineral waters and sulfurous springs, in addition to ancient remains and activity increased after the extension of the railways.sites such as "Al-Sabit" hill to the south of the district.
