The right to adequate housing in international Human Rights Law

The right to adequate housing is recognized in international human rights law as part of the right to an adequate standard of living.Indeed, this right has changed, as it is no longer limited to the ceiling and wall, it is extended to include socially and culturally appropriate housing and the availability of services, facilities and infrastructure. International law has paid great attention to the right to adequate housing as an essential human right, it can be argued that the right to housing is no longer a personal right, it becomes a collective right protected by international law and institutions.Thus, the human right to adequate housing can not be seen in isolation from the fundamental rights as they are interlinked.As such governments are obligated to protect and ensure the realisation of the right to adequate housing. This includes the duty to provide and strengthen the provisions dealing with basic services for the right of water, electricity, and other infrastructures. In Iraq, the housing conditions falls short of the international human rights law since right to adequate housing is the right to enjoy what is more than a roof and four walls it is the right of people especially woman and children to have a degree of secure tenure and affordable housing .
