International sanctions imposed upon Iraq and its legitimacy

Abstract

International sanctions of Chapter VII of the Charter of the United Nations are of great importance in the contemporary international community as a means for the maintenance of peace and security. However, what happened in the case of Iraq that the Security Council issued a rapid decisions that violate the functional competency rules established in the UN Charter, and constitute a blatant violation of Iraqs sovereignty and security. The issue that has been considered as a clear violation of the rules of international law and the United Nations Charter.
This paper examines with the situation of the application of these international sanctions against Iraq and the ambiguity of the Security Council resolutions which have led to criticisms and questions. These resolutions raise many questions about their legitimacy, through the framing of international sanctions in Chapter VII of the Charter of the United Nations in their abstract legal framework.
