The impact of unilateral economic sanctions on state sovereignty and the principle of non-interference
Abstract
Unilateral economic sanctions imposed by some states on other states, individuals, or corporations significantly impact state sovereignty and the principle of non-intervention, particularly as absolute sovereignty declines and calls for human rights and equality among states rise. Although there is a declared equality in sovereignty, these sanctions often target certain states while sparing others, influenced by various considerations. Furthermore, unilateral sanctions undermine sovereignty by affecting independence, economic stability, and equality, and they challenge the non-intervention principle established by the United Nations, whichdespite being a core tenet of international relationshas often been disregarded due to unilateral sanctions imposed by powerful states.
